More than a quarter of papers were graded A* or A, with 74 per cent rated C or better.

Envelopes containing the grades were handed out at 8am.

Headteacher Jon Nunes said "I am very proud of all of our students who have worked incredibly hard towards their successes today.

"They have grown into well rounded young people in addition to achieving academic success.

"We wish them all the very best for the future."

Many of the teenagers will leave Backwell behind as they head to universities across the country.

Head student Jemma Mayler achieved three A* grades in chemistry, maths, sociology and is off to Lincoln College, Oxford to study law.

She said: "I am so happy.

"I had a plan in place in case I didn't achieve my required grades, however I do not need it.

"I am very thankful to the school and my family for all the support. I am looking forward to the next chapter."

Ed Turner and Lizzie Knowles also won places at the University of Oxford.

James Harris, who joined Backwell School to undertake his A-level studies in 2017, achieved four A* grades in maths, further maths, physics and chemistry. He will begin studying maths at Warwick later this year.
