TWELVE athletes from Backwell have made it through to the finals after competing in a schools athletics championship.

Forty children from the school took part in the Independent Schools Association’s South West regional athletics trials at Exeter Arena.

The athletes from years four, five and six took part in various track and field events including sprints, the 600m, long jump and cricket ball throwing.

Alison Leatt, head of athletics at Fairfield, said: “This is highly competitive event with lots of good young athletes.

“The children all tried very hard and many of them did extremely well in their disciplines, with hopefully 12 children going through to the finals in Birmingham.”
