CLEVEDON School now has responsibility for all aspects of its operation after it became an academy.

The secondary school converted to academy status on February 1, after the Government’s Education Secretary approved its application to make the change.

It will still be called Clevedon School but will no longer be under the control of North Somerset Council.

It will be responsible for all decisions made, including those about its curriculum, and can now choose to buy services from the best providers available.

A school statement said: “The conversion to academy status now gives an opportunity to use the flexibility and freedom to continue to drive standards even higher and provide fantastic opportunities for students to develop and flourish.

“This marks the start of the next chapter for Clevedon School, one which will be exciting and allow the school to realise and extend the 2015 Vision published on the school website, which brings the extended commitment of the headteacher, John Wells, and the governors to the school, building on its considerable successes.”

Clevedon School, which was rated as outstanding by Ofsted inspectors last year and has seen exam results regularly improve, joins other secondary schools in North Somerset which have opted out of local authority control, including Backwell School and Gordano School.
