Duo aims to raise thousands for ‘disadvantaged’ young children

Two Clevedon men are aiming to raise £5,000 to help their charity which supports disadvantaged children.

The Pause and Engage Project, set up by Harrison Knowles and Ben Littleton, aims to provide support and mentoring to youngsters who have become disengaged from society through a variety of activities.

The duo have set up a fundraising page online in order to reach their target which would enable them to give 10 children a year-long mentoring placement. There, the youngsters would take part in activities and sessions including sport, art and cooking in order to build up their confidence.

Harrison, aged 22, said: “The Pause and Engage project was set up from our previous experience and connections of working in more than 90 schools.

“We realised there were large numbers of disadvantaged and disengaged children.

“The £5,000 will completely cover 10 children for a year-long mentoring placement, including weekly one-on-one sessions, equipment, activities and excursions.”

The Pause and Engage programme originally started with just one placement at St Nicholas Chantry Primary School which was so successful it took on multiple mentors to work with more children in Bristol and across North Somerset.

Peter Treasure-Smith, St Nicholas Chantry headteacher, says Pause and Engage’s Dan Lawton had an extremely positive effect on the child’s behaviour.

He said: “I would certainly use a Pause and Engage mentor again.

“The child concerned arrived 18 months ago displaying significantly challenging behaviours, with very low self-esteem and prone to angry outbursts.

“After a short time it became obvious to us that the child had no positive male role model in his life so we decided to set up a mentor for him.

“Thanks to Dan’s consistent approach and firm but fair style he gained the child’s trust and over time we have seen major changes in the child’s behaviour to the point where he is now an enthusiastic learner with largely positive behaviour.

“There are still issues to resolve but Dan is still a significant force for good in the child.”

The project is currently funded through the Jack Hazeldine Foundation, a charity founded in 2012 in memory of Jack’s Hazeldine’s work in using sport to help children achieve a better future.
