Doris’ landmark day

A Clevedon woman who enjoys life to the full has celebrated her 106th birthday.
Evelyn Brooks, who is known by family and friends by her middle name, Doris, celebrated the amazing milestone with her family at Arrigadeen Care Home in Cambridge Road where she has lived since last summer after injuring her foot following a fall while living on her own.
Doris was born in Clevedon and has lived in the town for the vast majority of her life, apart from a spell working as a domestic maid in London households with her husband, Fred, who worked as a gardener.
Fred, who Doris married in 1936 when she was 26 years old, was also from Clevedon but died in 1991 aged 86.
Doris also spent a large part of her early years looking after her brother, Billy, who was born with Down’s Syndrome.
Her niece Kathleen Brooks said: “Doris really enjoyed her day but after all the excitement she was very tired. She had all the family round and enjoyed a nice birthday cake.
“She is a very outgoing person and enjoys life to the full.”
