Dad runs marathon for daughter

A PROUD dad from Backwell is running the London Marathon in aid of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to pay tribute to his teenage daughter who was diagnosed with the condition at the age of seven.

Keith Hickling, aged 51, has been training hard since January and has already raised £1,000 towards the charity.

He said: “Running the London Marathon is a huge challenge for me, both physically and mentally, but knowing that I’m raising money for such a vital cause is making the miles go quicker in training.

“It’s also my personal tribute to the fortitude Katie has shown in growing up with diabetes. My constant hope is that the funds raised by JDRF can make a real difference in the search for the cure for type one diabetes.”

Katie is now 16 and leads a full and active life, but she still has to test her blood glucose levels several times a day and take regular doses of insulin to control the condition.

The money raised by the marathon on April 17 will help fund vital research into finding a cure for type one diabetes and its complications.

Keith is hoping to raise £2,500 towards the charity and complete the marathon within four-and-a-half hours. Anyone interested in sponsoring Keith can visit www.virginmoneygiving.comKeithHickling or call him on 01275 464067.
