A Portishead man appeared in court on Monday, days after he was arrested on suspicion of stabbing his friend in the back.
Mark Gilbert, aged 48 of West Hill, appeared at North Somerset Courthouse accused of wounding with intent and possessing cocaine.
He admitted the drug charge, but indicated a not guilty plea to the stabbing.
Prosecutor Joanna Packer said: “The victim, Michael Thomas, was a friend of Mr Gilbert and had lent him £40,000 towards some gambling debts.
“The defendant visited Mr Thomas’ house on January 25.
“The victim was making coffee when he felt a sharp pain in his back which resulted in a punctured lung.”
Police reportedly found 3.1g of cocaine when arresting Mr Gilbert, as well as a long knife.
The drug charge saw Gilbert ordered to pay £120 while he was released on conditional bail to appear at Bristol Crown Court on March 2 at 10am for the wounding charge.
