A fire - believed to have been started deliberately - damaged a building near the landmark Birnbeck Pier.

Fire crews from Weston were sent to Upper Kewstoke Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning (April 5), an Avon Fire and Rescue service spokesperson said.

"On arrival, crews found a fire in a derelict single-storey building," the spokesperson said.

"Firefighters used two high pressure hose reels, two 45mm jets and small gear to extinguish the blaze.

"The cause of the fire is thought to be deliberate."

NOTE: An earlier version of this story listed the location of the fire as Birnbeck Pier itself. Avon Fire and Rescue later confirmed an error in their report of the incident and confirmed it was a property in Upper Kewstoke Road.
