A 72-year-old woman has been jailed for a series of sexual assaults against two boys in Clevedon.

Delena Wells, aged 72, received a prison sentence of eight-and-a-half years at Bristol Crown Court today (Thursday).

The assaults happened in the late 1980s at Wells' former cottage in Clevedon.

The victims were vulnerable and aged between 13 and 15 at the time.

She encouraged one boy to drink alcohol, live life without rules and watched a pornographic film with him before indecently assaulting him.

She continued to abuse him frequently over many months.

A vulnerable teenager put his trust in Wells and she repaid him by repeatedly and systematically sexually abusing him.

She also exerted a controlling influence over the victim instead of providing support, threatening the boy that he would get into trouble with the police if he reported the assaults to anyone.

The other boy was also indecently assaulted during a visit to Wells' cottage after being given alcohol, an incident which has troubled him all his adult life. After sentencing, Judge Mark Horton awarded the investigating officer, DC Stephen Milkins, a Crown Court Commendation.

DC Milkins said: "These were blatant breaches of trust by Wells. Throughout the lengthy investigation and trial, Wells has shown no remorse or regret for her actions and constantly denied the offences, despite the two victims independently coming forward and providing graphic detail of what happened to them.

"Wells enacted her sexual desires and wishes on these young and vulnerable boys.

"Both victims have lived with the memory of the appalling actions Wells subjected them to, however both have demonstrated great bravery throughout this complex investigation and trial.

"We hope the sentence handed down by the court will provide some closure for the victims and they can both move forward with their lives and families.

"While it's unusual to see a female offender prosecuted for such offences, we hope the case will give victims of sexual abuse confidence to report it."
