FLU, stress and migraines were just three of the afflictions which caused North Somerset Council employees to miss 38,148 sick days in a year.

The figures, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, show that between June 2010 and June 2011 the amount of days taken off by the 6,675 employees amounted to 188 years.

Among the causes were eye problems, pregnancy-related disorders, diabetes and anxiety.

The average amount of days taken off by employees was 8.16 days a year, just over the authority’s target of eight.

The figure was significantly lower than that for the previous 12 months, where the total was 208 years.
