Groups across North Somerset have cancelled their events following coronavirus outbreaks.

More than half a dozen groups across North Somerset have cancelled their events following coronavirus outbreaks.

The uncertainty of the virus, also known as COVID-19, has led to groups postponing event following widespread advice.

There have been 1,372 confirmed cases in the UK, with two cases in Somerset and four cases in Bristol. In total, 35 people have died including a Nick Matthews, a 59-year-old man from Nailsea.

*The RNLI Portishead group has announced the ABBA and Beatles Night on March 20 (Friday) has been cancelled.

A spokesman for the group said ticketholders will be contacted and provided with a full refund.

They said: “If you have tickets, someone will be in touch over the next few days to sort you out with a cheque.”

*Nailsea Choral Society has cancelled the concert on March 21 at the Methodist Church.

*Clevedon Town Council has postponed the annual town meeting and council meeting on March 18.

*The Senior Citizens Forum’s meeting on March 27 has been cancelled as well as the reading at Books On The Hill by Kate Knapp on March 21.

Kate, who was due to travel from Australia but was advised ‘to delay the event until later this year or early next year’.

*The horticulture spring show which was due to take place, in Yatton, on March 21 has been cancelled.

*The table top sale on March 21 in Clevedon has been cancelled.

*The Clevedon Gardeners Club has also cancelled its meeting on March 23.

*The coffee morning in Yatton at St Mary’s Church on March 28 has been cancelled.

*The jumble sale on April 4, in Abbots Leigh, has been cancelled.

*Portishead Lions Club has postponed their Living Well Together event which was due to take place on April 4.

Nick Gough from the club said: “It was felt that the event was likely to be poorly attended and that we had a responsibility as a community organisation to help keep people safe, and that bringing people together to an event which was likely to attract a certain age group would be irresponsible.”

*The April meeting of the Phoenix Friendship club, of Nailsea, has been cancelled but further details will be posted in due course.

*The Yatton History Society have cancelled their event on April 7. They said a new date is unknown.

*Gordano ProBus Club, of Portishead, have cancelled their annual general meeting on April 8 until further notice.

*The upcoming Easter concert, in Congresbury, has also been cancelled.

MP for North Somerset, Dr Liam Fox has praised the government’s response to the pandemic.

He said: “UK Government’s response to #Coronavirus outbreak seems sensible, measured & proportionate and in line with the best medical advice.”
