Bridge closure this week for maintenance works
PUBLISHED: 13:00 09 June 2019
The Clifton Suspension Bridge will be closed for five days to allow maintenance works to take place.
The bridge will be closed to traffic and cyclists from tomorrow (Monday) until Friday from 9.30am-3.30pm.
A diversion route will be signed using Bridge Valley Road, Brunel Way and A369 Rownham Hill.
Bridge master, Trish Johnson, said: "We will carry out our annual inspection of the main chains using access platforms which cannot safely be used with traffic on the bridge.
"We will also be using the time to commence the transfer of cabling and equipment into the new toll houses together with the removal of the temporary toll houses on each side of the bridge.
"Pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge, but cycling will be prohibited.
"We hope by re-opening the road overnight and during the morning and evening peak periods we will minimise the difficulties caused.
"During these bridge closures pedestrians will still be able to use the bridge, but cycling will be prohibited.
"Cyclists may dismount and walk across the bridge, but as only one narrow footway will be open, cyclists are requested to avoid using the bridge if possible.
"Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust wishes to apologise for the inconvenience which these closures will cause."
Engineering inspections of the main chains, cabling works for the new toll houses and removal of the temporary toll houses are just a few of the tasks which will be carried out.
