A Clevedon theatre company has teamed up with England's biggest network of outdoor arts festivals.

Theatre Orchard is now a partner of the Without Walls Touring Network Partnership, a project which tours high-quality outdoors shows for free.

The theatre is the only arts organisation in North Somerset and one of two in the South West to be in this partnership.

Theatre Orchard will work with the network to launch its new Whiligig Festival on July 13 in Weston.

The event, which will be held in the town's Italian Gardens, will bring a dynamic programme of live, outdoor performances including shows supported by Without Walls.

Without Walls was established in 2007 and has grown from working with five festivals to 36.

The expansion has been made possible with the National Portfolio investment from the Arts Council to Without Walls.

Theatre Orchard's creative director Fiona Matthews said: “We are thrilled to be part of such an exciting and visionary national arts network, that will further enhance our reputation in the region for bringing free, ambitious outdoor arts events to the local community and wider area.

“Our partnership with Without Walls will enable us to deliver international entertainment in North Somerset and bring a captivating and innovative line-up of acts to the new Whirligig Festival in Weston.”

Josephine Burns, chair of Without Walls said: “We have been supporting artists to create ground-breaking new outdoor arts performances for more than ten years.

“Through that time we have seen a shift in the role of outdoor arts and an understanding of how free events can bring people together, entrancing children and young people, supporting the local economy, and animating our high streets.

“We are delighted to have Theatre Orchard join Without Walls.

“We know audiences will enjoy our world-class shows and feel they are part of something magical happening in North Somerset.”
