Clevedon Pier volunteers scrub the decks

A group of volunteers have been scrubbing the decks clean at Clevedon Pier.
Employees from Lloyds Bank spent the day getting their hands dirty by brushing the Grade I-listed pier’s 300-metre African hardwood (Opepe) boards.
The Clevedon Pier and Heritage Trust is now appealing for more volunteers to come forward and spend a day helping to maintain the attraction.
A spokesman for the trust said: “As an organisation run mostly by volunteers, we rely on the support of the local community in order to keep the UK’s only Grade I-listed pier in top condition.
“In a marine environment, you can imagine this is a constant battle and with the damage done by the sea alone equating to a daily bill of more than £100 – not including any running costs – we have to be creative about sourcing resources.
“This is essential because in a marine environment the Opepe deck gets slippery with a build-up of natural debris which can make access difficult for visitors.”
Anyone wishing to volunteer to clean the decks is asked to take their own equipment and wear warm, waterproof clothing and non-slip shoes.
Sandwiches and refreshments will be provided.
