A pier-branded beer, a new stage and awning and a bid for £25,000-worth of lighting will also mark the landmark anniversary.

Clevedon Pier, in The Beach, will celebrate 150 years since it opened with a special weekend of entertainment on May 27 bank holiday.

The celebration will also mark 30 years since its reopening in 1989 after a bad storm damaged the pier.

It will also see the pier’s artefacts put on display to the public for the first time.

There will be an exhibition showing the pier through the ages to give visitors the opportunity to reflect on their own memories of the town’s landmark.

Phil Curme, chairman of the Clevedon Pier and Heritage Trust which runs the pier, said: “We have always had a wonderful collection of documents and artefacts and to be honest they’re stuck in a side room.

“With a big bang we will swing the doors open and show them to the world.

“We are also working with the National Archive so the collection will be going live on Discovery.

“This is a massive feather in the cap for Clevedon for them to have partnered up with us – it really is very exciting.”

The celebrations, which will also fall in line with schools’ May half-term, will see a week of events being held.

Mr Curme said: “Community activity is a big deal for us and is at the heart of what and why we do things.

“We will be bringing a week of events in the hope of engaging tourists and residents.”

The pier has also announced other exciting developments which will take place over the coming year.

The trust is exploring purchasing a collapsible stage for the event which can then be used for future occasions as well as an awning around the pagoda at the end of the pier.

The pier team has partnered with Twisted Oak Breweries, in Clevedon, to create a beer to raise the profile of the 150th anniversary.

And it has also bid for £25,000 to light up the pagoda.

It is hoped, if the funding is granted, the trust will be able to install some lighting which will be in keeping with the traditional look of the grade-I building.
