Clevedon Pier will celebrate a historic milestone next year but is now appealing for people to share their stories and images of the landmark.

The Grade-I listed pier, in The Beach, will mark 150 years since its opening on May 27 next year when its archives will be on show for the very first time.

The celebratory day will not only see the historic documents come to light but also a number of special events and performances taking place.

But the Clevedon Pier and Heritage Trust is asking for locals and tourists to share their memories of the pier – everything from owning a commemorative plaque to attending a party.

The stories will be shared on the pier’s social media throughout the year to celebrate.

The trust will also be commissioning a short film, in partnership with a local production and film company, telling one of the more remarkable stories.

Trust chairman Phil Curme said: “Next year Clevedon Pier will be celebrating a hugely important birthday.

“It will be 150 years since this beautiful structure first delighted visitors to Clevedon.

“Over the course of this period the pier has been a source of great pride and enjoyment for local people.

“Indeed, when the Pier collapsed in 1970 it was through the spirited effort of the local population that it was saved for future generations.

“In 2019 we will be leading the community in celebrating the 150th anniversary of what is now an iconic national landmark.

“To mark this very special occasion we are calling on anyone who has memories of the pier to share their stories with us – after all, it is the people who visit and use the pier that make the history so fascinating.”

Clevedon Pier was opened in 1869 to receive paddle steamer passengers from Devon and Wales.

It is currently the only Grade-I listed pier in the country and has been described as ‘the most beautiful pier in England’ by poet Sir John Betjeman.

Today it is still a focal point for events in Clevedon and people are still able to catch a boat trip aboard the Waverley.

The pier was in its heyday in the 1950s, housing the famous rock ‘n’ roll jukebox which presented itself for a number of parties and most recently became the location for boyband One Direction’s video You & I.
