Clevedon Pier and Heritage Trust

A hand-tooled bible from the 19th century will make up part of Clevedon Pier’s birthday archive exhibition.

The bible was presented to Mrs Perry by the workmen connected with the Clevedon Pier construction on July 31, 1868.

Mrs Perry was the proprietor of the Rock Hotel during the time of the pier's construction.

The hotel is now known as the Royal Pier Apartments.

The bible's cover is illustrated with natural symbols – wheat sheaves, bunches of grapes and ivy leaves.

It is illustrated throughout with biblical scenes.

The bible was found stored in a wooden box with a lockable glass fronted door which was understood to have been kept on the wall of what was the Rock Hotel, and then the Pier Hotel.
