Barclays in Clevedon to close due to decline in customers using branch

A national bank has announced it will close its branch in Clevedon early next year.
Barclays in Linden Road will shut on March 2 due to dwindling numbers of customers using the in-branch services.
Figures suggest almost 80 per cent of Barclays Clevedon customers use online and telephone services to do their banking, with less than 120 people only banking over the counter.
Barclays community banking director for Bristol, Somerset and Wiltshire Richard Stockland said: “The way customers undertake their banking is changing as people increasingly use online, telephone and mobile devices.
“At Barclays Clevedon branch, customer usage has continued to decline and additionally 79 per cent of our branch customers are also using other ways to do their banking, such as online and by telephone.
“We have also identified that we have only 115 customers who solely use the counter to undertake their banking, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close the branch.
“We hope that the availability of our nearest Barclays branches at 134 High Street, Nailsea, and 68 High Street, Portishead, access to services at the local Post Office located at the Co-op in The Triangle, along with our range of digital channels will help to ease the transition for our customers.”
Letters have been sent out to customers registered with the Clevedon Barclays branch informing them of the decision.

Customer Jo Sims said: “I think it is a great shame that the branch is closing – it always seemed to be busy with customers with helpful staff, and was one of the few banks in Clevedon which you could park close to.
“It will be a great inconvenience for Barclays customers and businesses to travel to either Nailsea or Portishead.
“Many may move banks but perhaps Barclays is trying to get in first with its branch closure in Clevedon so it does not have the responsibility of being the only bank left in Clevedon.
“Online banking is very convenient but there are still many occasions when you need to go to an actual bank.”
The Barclays closure is the second blow in a matter of months for the area after the Post Office in neighbouring Post Office in Sixways shut its doors in September.
NatWest, HSBC and Lloyds all still run branches in Clevedon.
