A display has been set up at a Portbury church to explain the works being carried out on large parts of its roof.

St Mary’s Church in Church Lane has been undergoing roof repairs worth more than £100,000 since November thanks to a £93,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and a £7,500 donation from Garfield Weston. Other sources of finance have come from The Church Commissioners, the congregation and various fundraising events.

Children from nearby St Mary’s Primary School have also been involved by signing some of the new roof tiles which have now been put in place.

Churchwarden Ann Longstaff said: “The display shows some of the materials taken off of the old roof and why we needed to replace it. There will also be a presentation showing the progress of the work, with the last one being shown on Friday at 1pm in the church to coincide with the finish date of the repairs.”
