Volunteers are working feverishly ahead of the festive season, with Portishead’s Christmas lights to be illuminated next week.

The town's display in the High Street will be switched on Monday at 6.30pm, with a large crowd expected.

Kind-hearted people have given up their weekends of late to install the lights in West Hill and High Street, and their hard work will be rewarded with the eagerly awaited illumination on Monday.

Inspirational blogger, author and cancer survivor Heidi Loughlin and marathon man Ben Smith have been bestowed with the honour of flipping the switch, while BBC presenter Jemma Cooper will be master of ceremonies.

The ceremony will be held on a lorry stage in front of The Old Mill, and Santa and his elves will be on hand to collect letters from children.

Dog owners are told not to take pets as the switch on will conclude with a display of fireworks.
