HUNDREDS of pounds have been raised during a novel event in Clevedon.

A chilli cook off was held in the back garden of Heather Read, who lives in Cambridge Road, on September 26 when more than 50 guests gathered to taste the dishes offered by three competing teams.

The event was organised by a team of friends, including Heather, who wanted to raise money for the Children’s Oncology Ward 34 at The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and a local teenager who is receiving treatment there.

The ward was chosen as a beneficiary following the death of one-year-old George May, who died in April from cancer.

Ward 34 and its staff cared for George and gave support to his parents, Andy and Claire May from Clevedon, during the time he was there.

During the chilli cook off, 700 was collected thanks to ticket sales and also a raffle, which included prizes and vouchers donated by Mon Plaisir, Tiffin, Ian Eisentrager, The Curzon, Tesco, Lidl, Spinning Weal and Burnham artist Peter Howe.

After visitors cast their votes on their favourite chilli, Nick Kambitis was declared the winner.

Heather said: “The day really was good. Everyone wanted to come because it was a different event and they could get involved.”
