A pub in Abbotts Leigh wants to extend its opening hours, but the idea has been met with resistance from people living nearby.

The George Inn has asked North Somerset Council if its licence can be tweaked so it can serve alcohol and stay open for longer on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

The pub, in Manor Road, is close to a number of houses and many neighbours have objected to the proposed change. The council has received 45 complaints that a change would lead to an increase in noise, 25 about parking and traffic and three over antisocial behaviour.

None of the emergency services have submitted any concerns, ahead of the council’s licensing committee meeting, where councillors will make a decision tomorrow (Thursday).

The pub wants to extend the sale of alcohol on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays to 10am-1am. Its current licence allows it from noon to 11pm.

Some letters of support were sent to the council.

Paul Thompson, in his letter, said: “Since Matthew Rickard became involved with The George Inn, he has acted with complete integrity, turning around a traditional village local which although well-loved, tried to live on former glories and a business model which is unfortunately not sustainable today.”
