Plans to remove part of Clevedon Triangle’s canopy have been opposed by the town council.

As revealed by the Times in June, plans have been submitted to North Somerset Council to remove a large part of the canopy in the Triangle, including a section surrounding the site’s war memorial.

However, at a meeting of Clevedon Town Council’s planning committee last week, the members voted to recommend refusal for the application. North Somerset will have the final say though.

Councillor David Shopland said: “When the area was designed the canopy was an integral part of it.

“It serves a valiant purpose in the Triangle. It is an essential part of the Triangle scene and I am not prepared to let it go.

“The fact that it has not been maintained is not our fault.”

Graham Watkins, council chairman, added: “It certainly fulfils a purpose but it is a mess.”

The owners of the Triangle Centre, LaSalle Investment Management, says it wants to remove the structure due to it being in a state of disrepair and believes it encourages anti-social behaviour in the area and is hoping to start work later this year.

A spokesman for the company said: “Work will start as soon as planning consent is obtained in the autumn with the project likely to be completed just a few months afterwards.”

The firm said traders have also voiced concerns about the canopy.
