Pints and pizzas could soon be served at a former fish and chip shop, which is set to be converted into a microbrewery.

London and Cambridge (L&C), owners of Portishead’s precinct, has applied to North Somerset Council for permission to convert the unit once occupied by The Blue Seas Fish Bar into a small craft beer bar.

The chippy has been closed for a few months following the retirement of its owner.

The plans include a revamp of the frontage, which will be ‘freshened up with a new grey paint’, and a 24-capacity outdoor seating area will be created.

Around eight different beers will be available on tap, while pizza and coffee will also be on the menu.

L&C believes the pub plans would not harm nearby retailers, and would provide a boost to the town’s economy.

The firm also believes the site is ‘highly sustainable and accessible’.

The applicant’s design and access statement reads: “The change of use would provide a microbrewery and small craft beer bar where customers can try approximately eight beers on tap.

“The microbrewery would be a small system approximately 400 litres in size so the concept of craft beer can be shown to customers.

“Coffee will also be sold at the premises as well as seven to eight types of pizzas. These will be cooked in an electric pizza oven.”

The pub would be operated by Portishead Brewing Co, which hopes to open its first watering hole at the precinct.

The bar would operate from 10am-10pm from Tuesday to Thursday, 10am to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

On Sundays the pub will shut at 6pm.

The statement continued: “The scheme would not harm the vitality and viability of the shopping area, and that significant benefits could be accrued for the local economy.

“The bar seeks to compliment the main retail function of the area rather than detract from it.”

A £180,000 revamp of the High Street and precinct paid for by the council is underway, with the shopping area’s cracked and untidy paving set to be re-laid.

Micropubs have boomed in popularity in recent years, with beer-lovers increasingly interested in craft ales and smaller, more intimate bars.
