Dozens of jobs are set to be created in North Somerset after a deal was inked to lure an international firm to the West Country.

Scotland-based mechanical and electrical firm EnerMech will open a base in Portishead after agreeing to create 100 jobs in the region over the next three years.

The business has arms in the nuclear, refining, petrochemical, aviation, defence, and transport sectors across the globe.

With 3,500 staff on its payroll and forecast revenues in excess of £400million, EnerMech is set to bolster skilled employment opportunities in and around North Somerset.

The deal was agreed with the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) – which works with North Somerset Council – and WECA bosses hope the move will provide valuable investment to the region.

North Somerset Council leader Nigel Ashton said: “At every stage officers at North Somerset have worked closely with colleagues at WECA to ensure from the outset EnerMech were made to feel the region could meet the needs of this global business as it expands and diversifies activities in the South West.

“We remain ready to assist EnerMech as they move into this next exciting and significant chapter of growth.”

The location of the Portishead base is yet to be revealed.

Tim Bowles, West of England mayor, added: “With North Somerset we’ve supported EnerMech’s investment into our region by providing business intelligence, including advice on property, talent acquisition and connections into the region’s industry sectors; which has allowed the company to quickly establish a presence in the area.

“We are continuing to work with the company through to their next phase of expansion and securing 100 new jobs for the region.”

EnerMech has outposts in six continents.

And it has aspirations to double in size over the next five years.

Its South West general manager Duncan Frame said: “We envisage building a significant team of competent, multi-skilled individuals with experience across multiple sectors in the next three to five years and will establish the necessary workshop, storage and testing infrastructure to be on the doorstep of and accessible to potential new clients.”
