PROPOSALS for a Domino’s Pizza takeaway in the centre of Clevedon have been thrown out by North Somerset councillors.

The plans would have seen a new outlet for the fast food giant created at 32 Old Church Road, directly opposite an existing, independent pizza takeaway, Pizza Magic.

At a meeting of North Somerset Council’s north area planning committee, the plans to change the use of the former off licence from a shop into a takeaway were refused by a majority vote of seven to four.

When the plans were submitted, Clevedon Town Council objected to them due to concerns about increased traffic, insufficient parking for staff and customers and a potential adverse effect on the long term viability of the town centre.

More than 40 members of the public also made objections to the plans, with many also concerned about the fact a national chain such as Domino’s could put independent companies such as Pizza Magic out of business.

Adding to the number of takeaways already in the Old Church Road area was also a concern.

At Friday’s committee meeting, members against the proposal raised similar concerns.

Councillor David Shopland said: “This is between two road junctions. It will add to the traffic problems.

“It will affect the viability of the town centre adversely.”

Following the meeting, Pizza Magic director Rosanagh Besley said: “I am ecstatic that the plans were refused.

“Thank you to our customers, the local community and all of the people that have supported us in this.

“The decision reflects the view of the community.”
