AN ICONIC building in one of Clevedon’s most popular shopping streets has gone on the market.

The former home of Challicoms furniture store, 10 Hill Road has been put up for sale with a guide price of £1.1million. It is being sold following the closure of the furniture business which has been at the site since 1872.

Described by estate agents, Steven Smith, as ‘a very important development opp-ortunity with a combination of retail and residential planning expected’ the building covers some 1,056sqm and also includes parking at the back and a detached coach house. Challicoms launched a huge closing down sale on June 6 after its owners, Ted and Nicola Dark, announced they were going to retire.

Ted’s father bought the business in 1949 and Ted has worked for it since leaving school 42 years ago but decided to close it after four years of hard retailing.
