NAILSEA town centre will soon be benefiting from a 10million revamp.

Ellandi, which manages Crown Glass Place, has announced that Lidl will be coming to the town centre and creating 50 new jobs.

The new store will provide a huge boost for Nailsea, but the development will mean the loss of 67 parking spaces at Stock Way South.

Ellandi is also in talks with a few parties about renting the single storey retail unit on the old petrol garage site, while the dilapidated Sycamore House will be transformed into a retirement home.

Ellandi partner Mark Robinson said: “This is great news for Nailsea as it adds further critical mass to the retail choice, which has already improved over the past couple of years with the addition of Waitrose, WHSmith and leisure users such as J D Wetherspoon.

“Nailsea is quite a profitable trading place for the people who are there. We’ve been able to attract new tenants, but also keep the tenants we’ve got, which in this day and age is really unusual.”

The management team also wants to attract small businesses to Colliers Walk and is offering low cost rents to try to fill some of the retail units.

Mr Robinson added: “We’ve got a number of small units in Colliers Walk so we are thinking about renaming it Market Walk and trying to attract local complementary businesses.

“We’ve already got Burchills fruit and veg shop, so we’d love to get a butchers, an artisan bakery, a deli and a nice coffee shop to create a little niche market.

“Nailsea is an affluent town with quite a loyal catchment.

“WHSmith and Wetherspoon both trade above their expectations. We want to attract more national branches, but also local businesses where we can provide start-up units.”

A planning application for the new development is due to be submitted in the spring and owners hope to have it finished by 2014.
