MEMBERS of Portishead in Bloom (PIB) are appealing to residents to help smarten the town up.

With only weeks to go until the judging of the South West in Bloom contest, volunteers who keep Portishead decked in floral displays fear there are some areas in danger of losing the town vital marks this year.

Speaking at a Portishead Town Council meeting, PIB chairman Sandy Tebbutt said: “Preparations have been more difficult than ever this year, not only because of all the rain but also the state of parts of the town. The High Street is a particular worry to us as there are broken benches, damaged bollards and an unsafe wall to contend with, all of which will not bode well with the judges.”

The derelict White Lion pub which is falling into disrepair is also a bone of contention. Sandy added: “The White Lion is going to rack and ruin and it is in such a prime location, it is a shame for the town.”

PIB members are urging residents to help keep weeds at bay, pick up litter, make an effort with their own gardens and generally keep the town tidy over the coming weeks. Meanwhile, in addition to tending the flower beds and baskets, the team of volunteers will keep the judges’ route looking its best in their quest to present the town in the best light possible. Judging takes place on July 6.

Portishead first entered South West in Bloom in 1996 and has picked up a gold medal in the annual competition for the past four years. The group has also won gold medals at national level, competing against large cities.
