A TEAM of 12 friends from Pill are taking part in a novel challenge to raise money for charity this week.

On Thursday the group left The Kings Arms pub in Easton-in-Gordano to push a specially-adapted hospital bed for 175 miles over 11 days, all the way to Metherell in Cornwall.

The challenge was organised by Matt and Emma Derrick and their friend Paul Moger.

Emma, who is orginally from Metherell, suffers from an aggressive form of cancer and may only have weeks to live.

The 34-year-old was first diagnosed in August last year and she began to organise the bed push for when she was given the all clear. Unfortunately, since then she has become very ill and is not able to take part.

Paul Moger got involved with the bed push as his brother Nick is also battling severe face and neck cancer.

Dubbed door2door4thecure, the fund-raising fete is being held with the aim of collecting 10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, the Friends of Bristol Haemotology and Oncology Centre and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Emma said: “The care I have received from the hospital doctors, consultants, St Peter’s Hospice and my district nurses has just been amazing and I just wanted to give something back.”

Emma, who married Matt at a special ceremony at their home in North Grove on July 21, is hoping to be at the bed push finish line on Sunday when the fund-raisers will arrive at The Carpenter’s Arms in Metherell.
