A CHURCH in Portishead has been holding baptisms at Portishead Open Air Pool.

The Vintage Community Church is run by husband and wife team Chris and Sarah James. It opened in Portishead in 2010 with just a few families, but it is now a thriving family church with a congregation of around 90.

Because the church’s Sunday morning services are held at Portishead Primary School, it does not have its own baptism facilities. Pastor Chris says that while they could hire in a baptismal tank, it seemed a much better idea to use the fabulous community facility of the open air pool.

On Sunday, at the end of the pool’s 2012 season, the seafront facility was packed with friends and family of three members of the church, who were submerged in the pool as part of their baptism ceremony.

Chris added: “We hope to resume baptisms at the pool when it opens again for business in 2013.”
