A stretch of the A370 will be open tonight (Wednesday) as improvement works are cancelled due to poor weather.

The stretch, between the junction of Church Lane and Stancombe Lane in Backwell, will remain open until tomorrow evening (Thursday)

Commuters have been warned to be aware of raised ironworks when driving on the road.

The works were originally scheduled to conclude on Saturday, however the council has said they may be extended an extra night.

A North Somerset Council spokesman said: "Unfortunately we may have to keep the road closed an extra night, but we can only work with the weather we are given."

The stretch has been closed daily between 8pm and 6am since Monday.

The £144,000 resurfacing works also include improvements to signs and road markings, and the installation of new drain covers.

North Somerset Council's executive member with responsibility for transport, James Tonkin, said: "We looked at options to reduce the impact of our maintenance work and have chosen to close the road overnight.

"This is the safest and quickest way to get this important work completed. Traffic monitoring shows us traffic levels are the lowest during these hours.

"Signs will be in place, and we will have traffic marshals to help those who live and work in the area access their properties."
