Backwell boozers raise cash for heroes

A RECORD number of villagers spent their weekend sipping their favourite tipples at Backwell’s sixth beer and cider festival.

Backwell Village Club open up its doors for the four-day festival to raise money for Help for Heroes and more than 500 people turned up to support the Strictly Come Drinking event.

Club chairman Martyn Howell said: “With money tight and the Army’s casualty list getting longer, this year’s festival is especially important.

“The support from local businesses and groups of club members in sponsoring barrels has exceeded all expectation, and a number of brewers have been very generous too.

“It was a fantastic event attended by more than 500 people, which is a lot for a small club like us. We raised several thousand pounds and we are looking to make a four figure donation to Help For Heroes later this year.”
