GENEROUS pupils from Backwell held a backpack bonanza to send school bags to orphans in South Africa.

The Za Foundation, which is based in Portishead, received a request from its partner charity in Thembalethu, South Africa, for backpacks for orphans in the Nkomazi region.

A team of students from Backwell Sixth Form stepped up to the challenge and started a collection of new and nearly-new backpacks.

They collected bags from fellow pupils and also visited primary schools to talk about the project and inspire them to donate.

The dedicated students collected 114 rucksacks and raised enough money to send them out to South Africa.
