A purse containing a precious silver crucifix was stolen from a woman in her 80s in Clevedon.
The thief stole the item at noon on Tuesday lunchtime while the pensioner was shopping at Lidl, in Great Western Road.
Police are trying to trace the culprit and find the missing item, which is of huge sentimental value.
The victim was presented with the four-inch crucifix on her wedding day 60 years ago by her grandfather.
She has had it with her every day since getting married.
Police say the woman's pension details were also in her purse.
An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesman said: "The crucifix and cash were in a black leather-effect zip-up purse, which is seven inches long.
"We want people to remain vigilant for the purse and crucifix.
"We would also urge second-hand shops and jewellers to contact us if they are offered a silver crucifix.
"Anyone able to help is asked to contact us, quoting reference 5219227746."
