vote: Plans to bring more aviation fuel tanks into operation in Portishead have been stopped.
North Somerset councillors have voted against the application, from the Government’s Oil and Pipelines Agency, to increase the tanks in use at Redcliffe Bay from five to eight, amid safety concerns. The site contains 13 tanks which were originally put in place by the Ministry of Defence as part of a network providing fuel to military air bases via underground pipes.
Five tanks are now used to pump aviation fuel to airports around the country and opening up another three tanks would mean an increase of around 20,000 tonnes of fuel being stored on the site which is close to homes.
