HUMAN rights protesters were out in force in Nailsea to urge MP Liam Fox to support calls for an investigation into alleged war crimes in Sri Lanka.

The protest was organised by Act Now and Tamil Solidarity and volunteers distributed more than 2,000 leaflets to passers-by and residents and collected hundreds of signatures on a petition.

Campaigners are asking for North Somerset MP Liam Fox to call for an independent investigation into the atrocities committed in Sri Lanka at the end of the civil war in 2009 when more than 40,000 civilians were killed.

Shoppers were asked to sign a letter and petition to Dr Fox which will be handed to his constituency office.

Activists have vowed to continue campaigning across North Somerset until the Government Defence Secretary backs the investigation.
