A couple from Portishead celebrate 70 years of married life today.

The platinum milestone is to be enjoyed by Joe and Betty Risdale, aged 90 and 92, who married at St Gregory the Great Church in Horfield, Bristol in 1948.

In January 2017 the couple moved to Portishead after spending many years in Brislington, Bristol.

The couple met in Plymouth on Joe’s first night home returning from Australia with the Royal Navy when Betty worked for the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force at the time.

Joe and Betty have two daughters, Jane Berry and Susan Mitchell, and son Neil Risdale plus seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Betty said: “We’re still together after all this time, but I suppose you’ve got to have a good sense of humour when you marry a sailor.

“To me, Joe is still the lovely handsome man I married all those years ago.”
