A LIFE of caring for other people has been chronicled in a Clevedon woman’s autobiography.

Batya Fulcher has written about the past 70 years of her life in The Sound of Caring, from her dysfunctional family background to the many years she spent caring for her husband John, who suffered from dementia for 15 years.

The 74-year-old of Elton Road has worked as a missionary in Africa, when she met and married her husband John in Kenya and took on the care of his five children.

The couple also moved to Israel for two years before John began showing signs of dementia and they returned to England in 1995.

It was in 2007 that Batya moved to Clevedon to be closer to John’s children, at a time when John did not recognise her or the rest of the family.

In March 2010, John died at the age of 84.

Batya, aged 74, said: “I knew that after the many years of caring for my husband it was time to put pen to paper.”

Batya had drafted some material while in Kenya and had also kept diaries, to which she referred back to.

Her book has been published by Onwards and Upwards and was helped by Pam Leggate from Nailsea, who typed up her manuscript.
