A PORTISHEAD pensioner will be making his mark on the Great Wall of China next month.

Ian Ramsay, who lives in The Paddock, will spend around 30 hours over five days, trekking over watchtowers and mountains, through historic battlements and to the top of the Heavenly Ladder at Mutianya.

He will then place a brick in a section of the Great Wall, that is currently being restored, leaving his imprint on the historic structure for all time.

The 66-year-old, who is a member of the Pill Owl singing group, is taking on the challenge to raise money for Pill-based, Penny Brohn Cancer Care.

Mr Ramsay, who travels to China on October 12, said: “I like to keep fit and wanted to take on a challenge which could also raise money for a good cause. My mother died of cancer when I was just 14-years-old and so all cancer charities are close to my heart.”

Anyone wanting to sponsor Mr Ramsay can do so by calling him on 01275 844451. Donations for Penny Brohn Cancer Care can also be made via the collecting tins at the Kings Arms pub in Easton-in-Gordano.
