Police are investigating after a woman reported that her car was damaged while she and a child were inside in Weston-super-Mare.

The incident happened at about 7pm on Spring Hill in Worle.

Avon and Somerset Police said the woman told officers the occupant of a silver Volkswagen Polo pulled alongside her vehicle and struck it with what has been described as a hammer.

The alleged attack is reported to have caused damage to the vehicle.

It is understood that the people involved are known to each other.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Police are investigating after a woman reported that her car was damaged while she and a child were inside.

"It happened at about 7pm on Spring Hill in Worle.

"The woman told officers that the occupant of a silver VW Polo pulled alongside and struck her vehicle with what's been described as a hammer, causing damage.

"It's understood the individuals are known to one another."

Officers said they are following up a positive line of enquiry but are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or may have relevant footage.
