Nailsea and District Croquet Club has installed an automatic irrigation system for its four main lawns.
The project, completed over the winter, was largely funded by a grant from the National Grid.
The lawns, equivalent in size to eight tennis courts, were previously watered manually using hoses and sprinklers, a process that took hours of hard work from members.
The new system features twelve electrically operated pop-up sprinklers, which can be activated at the press of a button to water the lawns at night.
This ensures even irrigation coverage, preventing wet or dry areas, and reduces labour for club members.
The system was designed and project-managed by longstanding club member, John Wallace.
His expertise and meticulous calculations significantly reduced the project's financial requirements.
The trenches for the wires and pipes were hand-filled by club members over numerous tough sessions with shovels and rakes.
A spokesperson for the club said: "The winter of 2024/2025 was busy for the maintenance team at Nailsea and District Croquet Club, with the installation of an automatic irrigation system for all four of their main lawns.
"The club is very grateful to the National Grid and all those involved in bringing this major project to fruition on time for the start of the 2025 season."
The system will support germination of newly seeded areas and assist during prolonged drought conditions.
