A new chairman has been appointed at The Portishead Probus Club.

Stuart Roberts, a 71-year-old resident of the Somerset town, was voted in by members at the club's AGM at Clarence House on September 18.

He succeeds former local businessman Matt Westley.

Mr Roberts, an IT veteran, has also worked in the pensions industry and spent time in Portugal managing swimming pools and gardens.

Originally from Northampton, he moved to Bristol at 10 after living in Ghana and Nigeria.

He was educated at Bristol Grammar School and married Jan in 1973, who sadly passed away in 2011.

Mr Roberts has a son and daughter, both of whom are now parents, with the eldest grandchild just starting university.

He now lives with his partner Christine, and the two enjoy theatre outings, holidays, and days out.

An avid sports fan, Mr Roberts has been a season ticket holder at Bristol Bears Rugby Club and Gloucestershire Cricket.

He enjoys gardening, walking, and socialising.

Mr Roberts is also a National Trust Volunteer at Tyntesfield, a walk leader with The Portishead Strollers, and a member of the Portishead Civic Society and Portishead Horticultural Society.

The Portishead Probus Club has over 50 active members who meet every third Wednesday of the month from noon to 3pm in Clarence House, The High Street, Portishead.

Annual membership costs £20, with the average monthly fee for a two-course meal being £23.

Each lunch meeting features a guest speaker.

Prospective members can contact club secretary Brian Lazenby at 07711 385825.
