A NEW Chairperson of Council has been elected during North Somerset Council's Annual Council meeting last night (Tuesday, May 14).

Cllr Peter Crew, who was first elected to represent the community in 1984, has taken over from Cllr Wendy Griggs, a ward councillor for Yatton who has held the position for the past year.

The role of Chairperson is a non-political civic role. It is the duty of the Chairperson to represent the council at civic events and promote the area.

Anyone who would like the Chairperson to attend a civic event should contact the Chairperson's office at chairpersonofthecouncil@n-somerset.gov.uk or call 01934 634 902.

Cllr Crew has vowed to do all he can to support local businesses in the coming year, as well as promote tourism.

Cllr Crew, who represents Weston's South Worle ward, said: “My passion is supporting our local economy, so I am really looking forward in doing all I can to support local businesses in the coming year.

"Tourism is particularly close to my heart, and I also want to do all I can to help promote our newer businesses too.

“I am also really looking forward to meeting people from across North Somerset and doing all I can to promote the wonderful place we live in.”

Cllr Griggs has said that she has had an "enjoyable year" as Chairperson and that, during that time, she has enjoyed supporting charitable causes across the region.

She has added that it has been hard to pick a highlight.

Reflecting on her time as Chairperson, Cllr Griggs said: “It has been such an enjoyable year for me as Chair and a privilege to represent the people of North Somerset.

"I have been involved in some wonderful civic events, supported charitable activities and have loved meeting so many people from across North Somerset.

"I have been involved in so many wonderful events it’s been hard to pick a highlight, but one event that will last in my memory for years to come would have to be the CBeebies carol event at the Winter Gardens last year – an absolute joy to see so many of our children getting involved.”
