PLANS have been submitted to make improvements and repairs to Weston's Old Town Quarry.

The South Road quarry closed at the end of August 2023 due to structural concerns with the buildings which housed studios and a café.

Weston's Old Town Quarry is due to be transformed into an arts and cultural hub, following a £700,000 grant issued as part of the Government's Community Ownership Fund.

The application, which was validated on Wednesday, January 31, seeks to repair and upgrade parts of the site. It reads: "Erection of 4no. detached artist studios and WC facilities following demolition of Contractors Shed and composting WC; Main building - alterations to internal layout, improvements to fire escape routes and repairs; Workshop/store - Repairs, alterations and installation of new WC facilities and roller shutter door."

The Access, Design and Heritage Statement further outlines the plans: "The former quarry, incorporating a small number of independent structures is currently used as a work and events space for local artists.

"The site also contains a café and open space. Although temporarily closed for essential works to one of the structures within the site, the former quarry is also open to the public at prescribed times.

"The quarry was used to provide stone for local buildings from the early 19th century, and was known to be active until the mid-20th century.

"It is proposed to undertake minor alterations to a number of structures, to improve the layout and facilities for the resident artists and visitors, and to provide essential upgrades to fire routes in the process."
