YOUNG people who have a skill in sport or who have shown themselves to be caring and compassionate will be recognised in this year's Pride of Somerset Youth Awards (POSYA).

Founded by the Rotary Club of Taunton, the awards were created to honour the amazing achievements of young individuals throughout the county.

The Sporting Achievement Awards, which are sponsored by Passion for Somerset, aims to recognise exceptional talent and dedication of individuals or teams in the realm of sports.

The organisation's website explains its aims: "At the heart of Somerset there's an organisation whose mission is to inspire and empower communities, businesses and all who live in Somerset to share a passion for Somerset and encourage pride in all it has to offer.

"Welcome to Passion for Somerset - where inspiration, empowerment, and community pride flourish.

"Passion for Somerset brings the people of Somerset together, supports its members, organises activities and initiatives for the greater good and works with individuals, communities and businesses throughout the county."

Previous winners who have excelled in sports include England cricketer Jos Buttler, British gymnast Laura Gallagher, and Jamie Edwards, a hopeful for the Paris Paralympics in wheelchair athletics.

Caring and compassionate young people should also be nominated.

The Care Award, which is sponsored by the Somerset County Gazette, aims to recognise the impact that caregivers have on the lives of their family members, neighbours, or any individuals that they assist.

This could be in a volunteering, professional or even personal capacity, such as helping out an elderly relative.

When will the award ceremony take place?

This year, the award ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 16, 6.30pm-9pm at The McMillan Theatre, Bridgwater.
