A PORTISHEAD World War II veteran who survived being shot during D-Day is turning 100 next week.

To celebrate the landmark birthday, Arthur Oborne will be taking a walk through Portishead on Wednesday, January 24.

He will be starting at Waitrose Piazza at 8.15am and moving past the library into the High Street before arriving for breakfast at the Impero Lounge around 8.30am. He will be joined by members of the Portishead Royal British Legion.

Residents are encouraged to give Arthur, who survived being shot on June 9, 1924, a round of applause as he walks.

The Royal British Legion aims to support veterans and existing members of the forces.

The charity's website reads: "We're here through thick and thin – ensuring their unique contribution is never forgotten. We've been here since 1921 and we'll be here as long as they need us.

"We are the country’s largest Armed Forces charity, with 180,000 members, 110,000 volunteers and a network of partners and charities; helping us give support wherever and whenever it’s needed."
