PEOPLE in Clevedon are being asked to have their say as North Somerset Council plans more changes to the roads in the town.

New bus lanes could be installed on three roundabouts on the town’s ring road under the plans.

The Tickenham Road roundabout at the end of the ring road, the large roundabout with Ettlingen Way, and the Southern Way roundabout would all be enlarged with improved pedestrian and cyclist crossings and pavements.

The work is intended to make buses faster and more reliable as part of the council’s Bus Service Improvement Plan, which saw North Somerset Council receive £48m from the government to improve the area’s buses.

The council warned the roundabouts were currently causing congestion for the 50,000 people a month who use buses along the route.

The plans will see the Tickenham Road roundabout enlarged and with new bus lanes added to the east and west side.

New pavements would be installed nearer the roundabout, two new zebra crossings would be created, and the current pedestrian crossing would be moved to a “safer location.”

The large Ettlingen Way roundabout will gain bus lanes on all sides. New bus lanes would be created on the northbound and eastbound approaches to the roundabout, while the carriageway on Moor Lane would be expanded for another bus lane to be added there.

On Central Way, one of the existing lanes for cars would be turned into a bus lane. A zebra crossing could also be installed.

At the Southern Way roundabout, new bus lanes would be created on both approaches to the neighbouring Tesco roundabout and the carriageway would be widened.

Crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists would be “improved”.

Hannah Young, who represents Clevedon East on North Somerset Council and is the council’s executive member for highways and transport, said: “We really want to hear everyone’s views on these proposals for Clevedon – it’s important that any changes that take place are shaped by those who know and use these routes, to help us understand the potential impact of these proposals, and to directly shape our next steps.

“As a council we are often asked to make buses more frequent, reliable and easier to access. The proposals aim to reduce bus delays at peak times, help buses keep to published timetables, maintain the current service frequency, and make the bus a realistic choice for more of our residents and visitors.

“We want to work with residents and businesses to test and develop these proposals together to address the current challenges for all road users.”
