A local football side from North Somerset has raised over £1,000 for charity.

Ashton & Backwell United raised £1,058, doubling their target which was set at £500, for the Movember campaign

Movember is all about growing a moustache to raise awareness and funds for men's health.

Stags manager Nick Smart said his players came up with the idea to raise money for the charity and hailed his side as a “fantastic bunch of lads” and praised the efforts by everyone involved.

“The boys are always looking to do positive things and obviously Movember came along and they all jumped on board to raise money for a good cause beating their original target of £500,” Smart said.

"Now they can brave the cold weather with a clean shaven face."

Smart commended the loyalty his players have given Ashton & Backwell, following their decision to continue with just one club in Division One of the Somerset County League after relinquishing their place from the Toolstation Western League Premier last season.

“After the trials and tribulations of last season these boys had stayed loyal to the club and myself," he added.

"We are eternally grateful as we look to rebuild again and get the club going in the right direction on and off the field.”

Ashton & Backwell return to action at Watchet Town this Saturday.
