A successful Christmas ‘tree-cycling’ scheme is set to return in North Somerset.

People from the region and its surrounding areas are once again prompted by North Somerset Council to donate their real Christmas trees after the festive season comes to a close.

The donations benefit both the environment and three local charities: Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm, St Peter’s Hospice, and Weston Hospicecare.

The tree-cycling initiative was launched by North Somerset Council in December 2020.

Councillor Annemieke Waite, the council's executive member for climate, waste and sustainability, shared that over the last three years, more than £87,000 had been raised for local charities, over 12,000 trees recycled, and 190 tonnes of carbon emissions reduced.

The councillor said: "It’s quite remarkable that these North Somerset Christmas ‘tree-cycling’ schemes have raised over £87,000 for local charities over the last three years.

"I’m therefore delighted that we’re supporting the schemes again this year."

Annemieke Waite also highlighted that this effort is a brilliant way for individuals to support their local communities and charities while being environmentally responsible.

Further, since all recycling activities are carried out locally, it helps reduce transportation and carbon emissions.

"I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all the partners for their hard work in making this happen.

"A special mention must go to our contractor Glendale for once again donating their time and resource to helping complete the chipping," Annemieke Waite added.

Many of the donated trees are chipped for land regeneration, while others are donated for animal enrichment within their habitats.

Noah’s Ark Zoo Farm will be accepting trees between Wednesday 3 and Sunday 21 January.

Weston Hospicecare’s and St Peter’s Hospice's Pines for Pounds will collect trees on specific dates in selected postcode areas.

Trees may also be taken to recycling centres or put out for collection, under the garden waste collection service, from Monday 15 January 2024.

Residents are advised to check the council’s website for further information, recycling centre timings, and advice on tree disposal at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/recycling centres and www.n-somerset.gov.uk/christmas-recycling.
